In order to provide a sustainable foundation for the further development of arts and cultural education, our network offers an international forum to exchange, discuss and renew research-based knowledge on arts and cultural education. For this ENO organises meetings and conferences, aims to make information easily available in online repositories and yearbooks and initiates cross-national research projects to gather reliable knowledge through thorough anaylsis.
Monitoring & Comparative Research
Comparative research on arts education across countries is hard to find, especially when it comes to rigorous analysis that goes beyond descriptiveness. ENO wants to stimulate continuity in comparative and monitoring research that helps to understand similarities, differences and changes in national and transnational arts education. Building on previous attempts, ENO has developed a thematic survey that collects cross-national information and experts’ assessments on key issues. Taking this approach further, ENO aims to regularly collect and analyse empirical data and to expand its newly established European arts education expert panel. In this manner, we hope to generate findings that are beneficial for professionals at the regional and transnational level, to offer a critical point of reference, and to raise public awareness of arts education issues in national, global and regional discourse.
Terms, Topics & Concepts: International Perspectives
Working on the future development of arts and cultural education with researchers and experts from several European countries needs deeper understanding: Researching the field across countries addresses a great diversity of contemporary and historical contexts, political frameworks and the manifold dimensions of artistic and cultural education at national and European levels. ENO thus faces the challenge of identifying and discussing terms that shape national programmes and policies and illustrate local concepts and conditions reflected in arts and cultural education practices. By developing an operational set of keywords and theoretical concepts, ENO aims to support the implementation of joint, trans-national research projects, advocacy activities and, last but not least, a shared understanding for arts and cultural education that still leaves space for local particularities.
Moreover, ENO also aims to identify and explore topics that are crucial for the future development of the field of arts and culture education such as cultural diversity, sustainable development and social cohesion. ENO hereby strives to find common ground with respect to the issues and priorities set in the “Seoul Agenda: Goals for the Development of Arts Education” and the UN Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda. By reaching out to practitioners, researchers and policy makers involved in arts and cultural education, we want to create and shared expertise which is viable for arts and culture education practice beyond national borders.
